Boeing Starliner Orbital Flight Test-2: Uncrewed Landing | NASA

On May 25, 2022, Boeing's Starliner spacecraft landed in the desert at White Sands Missile Range’s Space Harbor in New Mexico, rather than splashing down in the ocean, after returning from the second uncrewed flight test to the International Space Station as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP). This was a first for an orbital capsule built in the United States. Starliner's proven parachute and airbag systems provide a soft landing on sand, reducing the load on the crew. Without sea state considerations, like wave height, swells, currents and surface winds, passengers are able to step right out of the spacecraft onto dry land.

Boeing's Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft have been developed and tested to fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station from U.S. soil.
