Zooming in on Merging Spiral Galaxies | Gemini North Telescope

Zooming in on Merging Spiral Galaxies | Gemini North Telescope

Zoom in reveals a pair of interacting spiral galaxies—NGC 4568 and NGC 4567—as they begin to clash and merge. These galaxies are entangled by their mutual gravitational field and will eventually combine to form a single elliptical galaxy in around 500 million years. Also visible in the image is the glowing remains of a supernova that was detected in 2020.

Panning across Planetary Nebula ESO 378-1 | ESO

This extraordinary bubble, glowing like the ghost of a star in the haunting darkness of space, may appear supernatural and mysterious, but it is a familiar astronomical object—a planetary nebula, the remnants of a dying star. This video pan sequence gives a close-up view of what is the best image of the little-known object ESO 378-1 yet obtained and was captured by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in northern Chile.

This video sequence starts from a wide field of the Milky Way and closes in on a rather empty patch of sky in the huge constellation of Hydra. A strange blue disc becomes visible—the planetary nebula ESO 378-1. The final very detailed view comes from ESO’s Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Located about 1,200 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Carina (The Ship's Keel), the Toby Jug Nebula, more formally known as IC 2220, is an example of a reflection nebula. It is a cloud of gas and dust illuminated from within by the central star, designated HD 65750. This pan video gives a closer look at this rare object.

Gems of The Earth's Southern Sky

Gems of The Earth's Southern Sky

Part of the southern Milky Way, around the constellations of Centaurus, Crux and Carina. In the center of the image, the majestic Southern Cross (Crux) constellation, symbol of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), takes the central stage with dark Coalsack Nebula close by. On the left, brightest stars of Centaurus can be seen with their typical colors. The brighter one is Alpha Centauri, one of the closest stars to our Sun. Right part of the view belngs to prominent Carina Nebula, one of the most significant of its type in the whole sky. To achieve so many details, the photographer used a Vixen Polarie mount.

The Coalsack Nebula: Wide-field View | ESO

This rich landscape is part of the small constellation of Crux (The Southern Cross). The very bright star is Alpha Crucis, also known as Acrux, one of the four stars that make up the famous cross shape. Most of the upper left part of this image is filled with dark dusty clouds that form part of the huge dark nebula called the Coalsack.

A Close Look at Part of The Coalsack Nebula | ESO

A Close Look at Part of The Coalsack Nebula | ESO

This video takes a close-up look at a new image from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope. It shows part of the huge cloud of dust and gas known as the Coalsack Nebula, close to the Southern Cross in the southern Milky Way. The dust in this nebula absorbs and scatters the light from background stars, making many of them appear fainter and redder.
