Window to the World in 360° | ESA Muninn Mission | International Space Station

Window to the World in 360° | ESA Muninn Mission | International Space Station

Join European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut Marcus Wandt inside the seven-windowed cupola, the International Space Station's "window to the world". Pan around in this 360 degree video to enjoy the view.

The European Space Agency-built Cupola is the favorite place of many astronauts on the International Space Station. It serves not only as a unique photo spot, but also for observing robotic activities, arriving spacecraft and spacewalks.

Marcus was launched to the International Space Station on a SpaceX Dragon crew spacecraft as part of Axiom Mission 3 on January 18, 2024. His two-week mission on board is known as Muninn.

Lenticularis Cloud over High Tatra Mountains of Slovakia | Earth Science

Lenticularis Cloud over High Tatra Mountains of Slovakia | Earth Science

Photographer Vicktor Belicak: "This beautiful and mesmerizing lenticular cloud display formed over the High Tatra Mountains of Slovakia on December 17, 2023. It began to take shape in the early afternoon and remained in place until nightfall. Near sunset, when the above photo was captured, the lingering Sun's reddened rays further enhanced the majesty of these stacked clouds—a once in a lifetime experience."

Lenticulars are formed when strong winds blow across complex terrain, causing the water vapor in the air mass to alternately compress, then decompress, and thus condense into shapes which roughly mirror the terrain beneath. They are also near-certain indicators of turbulence.

Technical Details: Nikon D850 camera; 28mm lens/focal length; ISO: 200; f 4.35; 00.10 exposure time.

The Most Extreme Flights of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter | NASA/JPL

The Most Extreme Flights of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter | NASA/JPL

Mars Report: NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter pushed aerodynamic limits during the final months of its mission, setting new records for speed, distance, and altitude. Hear from Ingenuity chief engineer Travis Brown on how the data the team collected could eventually be used in future rotorcraft designs.

Ingenuity was originally designed to make up to five flights—but completed 72 before sustaining rotor-blade damage that rendered it unable to fly. NASA announced the end of the helicopter’s mission on Jan. 25, 2024. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California built and manages operations for Ingenuity and the Perseverance Mars rover.

Bushfires in Northern Australia: A 2023 Landsat Timelapse | USGS

Bushfires in Northern Australia: A 2023 Landsat Timelapse | USGS

The bushfire season in northern Australia generally runs from May to October. The year 2023 was an especially intense year in the north. Select infrared imagery from the Landsat archive was used here to produce a rolling mosaic timelapse of the landscape in eight day segments. Each new segment of imagery reveals fresh burn scars, increasing in size and frequency in October and November. Dry winters, fuel load, and rising temperatures all play a role in the Australian bushfire season. Landsat imagery helps communities in Australia plan for fires and work to restore habitat.

Rocket Lab Electron Launch: “4 of a Kind” Commercial Satellites in New Zealand

Rocket Lab Electron Launch: “4 of a Kind” Commercial Satellites in New Zealand

F43 Electron splashdown and recovery

F43 assembly in the hangar

Rocket Lab’s Electron launch vehicle launched the “Four Of A Kind” Mission, four NorthStar Earth & Space (NorthStar) Space Situational Awareness (SSA) satellites, from Pad B at Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in Mahia, New Zealand, on January 31, 2023, at 06:34 UTC (19:34 NZDT).

The four L.E.M.U.R. (Low Earth Multi-Use Receiver) satellites were built and will be operated by Spire Global, Inc’s (Spire). Electron’s first stage made a parachute-assisted splashdown.

The four Space Situational Awareness (SSA) satellites were placed in a 530km circular Earth orbit. They will monitor near-Earth objects from space to provide timely and precise information for space object detection, tracking, orbit determination, collision avoidance, navigation, and proximity alerts.

The mission was Rocket Lab’s 43rd Electron launch overall, bringing the Company’s record of successfully deployed satellites to 176. The mission was the first of a busy launch year for Rocket Lab, with the Company scheduled to launch more in 2024 than any previous year since the Company began missions in 2017."

Sonification of The Mice Galaxies: NGC 4676 | NASA Goddard

Sonification of The Mice Galaxies: NGC 4676 | NASA Goddard

The Mice Galaxies are a colliding pair of galaxies, that will eventually merge into a single galaxy. They are located about 300 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.

In this data sonification, scientists represented brightness with volume and pitch—brighter light is louder and lower pitched. The vertical position of objects in the image is used to control the pitch of sustained musical strings, and cymbals swell following the brightness of the galaxy cores. Listen for a cymbal crash played for the foreground star with diffraction spikes, too!

What You Need to Know About Jupiter's Ocean Moon Europa | NASA

Deep beneath the crust of Jupiter’s frozen moon Europa lies a massive liquid water ocean. Exploring this ocean world with our Europa Clipper spacecraft could provide new clues in our search for life beyond Earth.

Scheduled to launch in October 2024, Europa Clipper’s main science goal is to determine whether there are places below the icy moon’s surface that could be habitable.
